Context #1 (from Kraye)
If you want to play this game, these are some ground rules to remember:
- We can talk about anything.
- Own your green/yellow/orange/red.
- Own the safety word, “AVOCADO”.
- Your well-being is your business. No-one has to look out for your well-being. If you don’t like what is happening, you can always hit the close button and it will all become a memory.
- What comes out of anyone’s mouth is an OPINION, not the truth.
- Your meaning-making and emotions/feelings are generated from your history. You do not have to do what they are telling you to do.
- The point of a lot of this is to experience just how firmly your Primal Character has your ass. This will primarily show up in grasping, “This has-to/can’t be this way.”
- If you come close to the edges of your particular psychological box, your Primal Character will try to get you back to the center by doing the typical amygdilic flooding and/or disassociation and/or “this cannot be”. You do not have to do what your Primal Character is telling you to do.
Context #2 (from Ken Wilber)
Basically, most of the trouble comes from confusing compassion with idiot compassion—which are the terms Trungpa Rinpoche used for this crucial distinction.
Zen calls this the difference between ‘Grandmother Zen’ and ‘Real Zen.’
In order to awaken from the dream of samsara, the ego itself must be really kicked around—often severely.
Otherwise, you’ll simply continue to play your favorite games.
Grandmother Zen doesn’t challenge you.
In order to be ‘kind,’ she’ll let you sleep in if you want, stop meditating early if you don’t like how it’s going, and allow you to wallow in yourself.
But Real Zen uses a very big stick, lots of loud yelling, and there are occasionally broken bones, and certainly shattered egos.
Real compassion kicks butt and takes names, and it is not pleasant on certain days.
If you’re not ready for this fire, then find a New Age, sweetness-and-light, soft-spoken, perpetually smiling teacher—and learn to relabel your ego with spiritual-sounding terms.
But stay away from those who practice real compassion, because they will fry your ass, my friend.
What most people mean by ‘compassion’ is: Please be nice to my ego.
Well, your ego is your own worst enemy.
And anybody being nice to it is not being compassionate to you.
— Ken Wilber paraphrasing Trungpa Rinpoche lineage
